Conditioning your hair is a crucial part of any solid hair care routine. We don’t have to tell you to condition your hair every time you wash your hair. But the truth is, many people use improper habits when conditioning their hair. Yes, there are proper and improper methods. It may seem like an easy step in your hair care routine, but so often those ‘simple’ steps tend to be done improperly. If you want gorgeous, bouncy and healthy hair it’s time to take your conditioning step much more seriously. These are great tips for proper conditioning…

    Remove All Shampoo
Before you apply any amount of conditioner to your hair, there needs to be a thorough wash of shampoo. Applying conditioner when you still have residue of shampoo left isn’t going to do your hair any favors. Thoroughly massage your scalp and hair to ensure that ALL of the shampoo has been completely washed off your hair before you go any further in the conditioning step of your hair washing routine.

    Avoid Conditioner on Scalp
Have you been applying conditioner to your all of your hair, including the roots? It’s time to make a change. Conditioner doesn’t need to be applied to your roots and should be avoided in your scalp area as it can weigh your hair down. Instead, focus on the hair about half way down your hair’s length and down to the ends. The key is to gently massage the conditioner into the hair strands in the described area to really get the conditioner into the hair.

    Rinse with Cold Water
When rinsing the conditioner out of your hair, you’re going to want to turn the temperature down a bit. After you allow the conditioner to rest and soak on your hair strands for a couple of minutes, begin to rinse the product out of your hair. Why do you need to turn the temperature down? Rinsing your hair with cold water when rinsing the conditioner out has been found to help close the hair cuticle. Warm water opens the cuticle of the hair, but when you’re done washing and conditioning your hair you want it to be closed to maintain its health and lock in the moisture-cold water helps you to accomplish exactly that. As much as you may not enjoy cold water, doing so is going to do wonders for your hair’s health and appearance.

    Remember to Deep Condition
Using a quality conditioning product and the methods we mentioned above work wonders for your hair. But just using a conditioner when washing your hair really isn’t enough. Experts stress the importance of using a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. These specified treatments are great for giving your hair that focused conditioning it needs. The fact is, our hair needs to be thoroughly conditioned to maintain its health and regular conditioners aren’t enough. Make it a point to use a deep conditioning treatment once a week, and follow the above methods to get the best benefit from doing so.
