2017 Loves Retro Inspired Hair

We can’t get enough of chatting about trends now that we’re starting to get a feel for some of the trends we can expect in 2017.  In the past year we’ve definitely had a lot of flashback trends happening, and we’re all about it.  It doesn’t look like we’re stopping with the trend revival in 2017, either.  In fact, it’s appearing as though 2017 loves retro inspired hair.  Yep!  We’re going to be seeing all sorts of retro inspired hair throughout the next year, and if you’re like us you can’t wait for it all.  You know we’re always here to keep you up-to-date so we’re sharing some of the retro inspired hair looks you can expect to see this year.

retro waves

Loose Waves + Accessories
Loose waves is definitely a retro inspo vibe that we’ve all known and loved for quite a while.  While there are so many different takes on waves, during couture fashion week it seemed to be about those retro inspired waves that are so classically chic.  Some designers switched things up a bit by adding some fun accessories to the loose waves to give us even more retro inspiration (hair accessories are a must with retro-inspired looks!).

The Sleek Ponytail
There’s something about the sleek ponytail that always looks chic, probably why it’s such a retro/classic look that designers revisit every so often.  It’s clear we’re having some major retro inspired hair, based on some of the recent fashion shows that have taken place.  Many of the models had sleeked back ponytails that were very classic, but also made a major retro statement.  It’s a look that goes with so many different looks, and has a way of adding a retro vibe to really any look.  So we’re not surprised to see all of the sleek ponytail looks that appear as though they’re going to be making some major retro inspo this new year.

retro braid

The Low Ponytail Braids
Another classic, retro-esque type of hair style that we noticed on quite a few runways during couture fashion week recently was the low ponytail braids.  Braids have definitely been having a major moment in the past year or two, but with the low ponytail braid it’s giving us some retro vibes that we’re all about.  Many designers added some accessories to the braids to add to the retro inspiration – and of course to switch up the traditional braid look that we all know and love.

Adding Clips
We couldn’t forget to mention the use of clips being added to hair styles.  Retro hair styles always made use of clips in unique ways, and during the recent couture fashion week the designers were getting some major retro inspiration and using clips to create completely unique hair styles that really added some retro edge to the looks.  Many were adding clips across the top of the heads in a traditionally slicked back hair style – talk about adding a different element to the hair style, right?

Do you have a favorite retro inspired hair style you think is going to be popular this year?

Hot Hair Colors For 2017

We’re a couple of months into 2017 now, and any time we have the start of a new year it comes with a range of new trends for us to look forward to.  Every year there are different hair colors that we tend to see EVERYWHERE.  That’s the fun part of the beauty industry, really, that it’s constantly changing and evolving at all times.  We always have fun chatting about trends, so we thought we would share some of the hot hair colors for 2017.  We know you want to stay on trend, and you may find that one of the hot hair colors for 2017 is something you want to try out for yourself!

woman blonde hair

Light Blonde Hair
Ok, so we know blonde hair color is always popular but every year we always see the blonde ladies taking things in a little bit different direction to keep things interesting.  2017 is all about the bright, light blonde hues on locks.  We’re seeing an all over light blonde hue happening on ladies already, it’s a great way to add some softness to your look but also do so in a color that’s light and bright.

Blorange
Another different take on the blonde hair color we all know and love.  Not sure what blorange is?  Well, it’s actually exactly what it sounds like – a combination between blonde and orange.  Or rather, the pairing of the two.  This color is going to be in all different variations, with some ladies airing more on the orange side, and others more of the blonde with just a hint of orange.  It’s a great way to add warmth and a little dimension to the hair in a unique way.

Red-brunette
Clearly, this year is all about switching up the traditional blonde and brunette shades and adding in different colors.  This is a color that experts in the industry are saying we can expect to see quite a bit of this year.  Essentially, it’s the addition of a reddish hue mixed into an allover brunette hair color.  Some are calling it a cinnamon brunette.  Whatever you call it, it’s pretty gorgeous and a totally fresh take on a brunette look.  If you’ve been trying to find a way to rock the brunette locks but feel a bit more updated, this could be the ticket for you in 2017.

ombre hair

The New Ombre
The ombre hair color trend has been around for quite a while now, and it’s obviously time for a little change to this popular hair look.  Some experts are referring to the new method as a color melt technique.  Essentially, it’s a softer take on the ombre look with less of the color change and the lighter colors placed a bit more strategically throughout the hair.

Bronde
Another unexpected hair combination in the new year has got to be the bronde hair color.  If you were thinking it’s the combination of blonde and brunette, you’re right.  It’s really the combination of the two hues, creating a completely unique hair color look.

Advice for Styling Coarse Hair

woman with curly hair

We know that styling hair can be a bit frustrating….even stressful for so many women.  We’re right there with you, by the way.  Really understanding your hair and the best tips to follow are crucial to helping you to be able to style your hair in the way that you want for yourself.  Since we all have different hair types and textures, what works for one person may not work for you.  We think that’s one of the fun things about the world we live in, all the diversity allows us all to be unique.  We decided to share some of our favorite advice for styling coarse hair, for the ladies with coarse hair to try out for themselves.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often
You may have, or may not have, heard that washing your hair daily has been found to NOT be so good on anyone’s hair.  This is especially true for the ladies that have coarse hair.  Why?  Well washing your hair too often can strip your hair of its natural oils, causing it to be much more dry than you’d like.  Experts suggest that those with coarse hair shouldn’t wash their hair any more than 2-3 times a week to keep their hair healthy, happy and much easier to manage.  Make use of products like dry shampoos to get you through between washes.

Use a Hair Treatment
It’s said that many ladies with coarse hair can find that their hair becomes a bit more dry than they’d like.  Dry hair can be difficult to style and really work with because it’s, well…dry.  So instead of just dealing with dry hair, experts suggest that coarse hair ladies should make it a point to enlist in a hair treatment every week to give their hair the extra boost of moisture and hydration it’s craving.  You’ll want to look for a hair treatment/mask that’s designed to specifically add moisture and hydration to the hair.  Applying it to your hair and scalp weekly can help your hair be much easier to work with.

Keep Up with Trims
Getting your hair cut can definitely feel like a task, but when you have coarse hair it’s important to make sure you’re keeping up with hair cuts and trims to keep your hair healthy, happy and more manageable.  It’s suggested to get at least a trim every 6-8 weeks for the best results.  Of course, we can’t forget to mention the importance of having a good hair stylist do all your cuts and trims.  You’ll want someone who understands your hair’s type and is knowledgeable in how to cut your hair so that it’s easier to manage and style.

Use Quality Products
This goes for any hair type, but we had to be sure to mention it.  Since our hair’s health plays such a huge role in how we can style it – it’s important to make sure that you’re using quality hair care products.  This means using shampoos and conditioners, too, that are high quality and designed to work with your hair’s type.

Trending: Hair Dusting for Tiny Split Ends

Trending: hair dusting for tiny split ends.  Split ends are always a ‘thing’ that we all have to deal with on a fairly regular basis.  But if we’re all pretty honest with ourselves, we try to drag out actually dealing with our split ends for as long as possible.  Sometimes getting a full hair cut for tiny split ends can seem like a big task…until now.  Hair dusting has become a pretty big trend in the hair world.  If you’re an avid social media user, you may have seen some videos of hair dusting and it’s pretty fascinating.  We’re loving the hair dusting trend so thought we would share a bit more about it in case you’re not familiar, or you’re curious about this hair trend.

woman cutting hair

So often when we think of getting rid of split ends we think we need to schedule a hair cut with our hair stylist of choice.  However, with hair dusting, making waves in the hair world that may not necessarily be the only option anymore.  Hair experts have said that hair dusting is a legitimate hair cutting technique that can do wonders for split ends.  One of the reasons so many of us put off getting our split ends cut off is because we don’t necessarily want to lose a lot of length.  The bonus of hair dusting is experts say that it’s a technique that allows hair stylists to eliminate split ends in the hair, without taking much (really if any) length off of the hair.  It’s essentially a technique that allows them to just remove the unhealthy, split ends in the hair and leave the healthy hairs behind.

The thing about leaving split ends for too long is, it can cause our hair to become more damaged and brittle, causing more and more breakage to occur the longer we leave the split ends.  With hair dusting, we’re able to stop a lot of additional damage from occurring due to split ends.  So you may be wondering how they actually go about this hair dusting technique.  Basically, when a hair stylist provides a hair dusting technique to your hair they go from the bottom/ends of the hair and snip the tip of the hair.  This is what allows them to remove the split ends, without removing the length.  The key to the hair stylists to really get the best results with hair dusting, is the hair needs to be straight and smooth so they can really see the split ends well.

The downside of hair dusting?  Because it’s such a specific type of hair technique focusing on a lot of detail, it’s a pretty time consuming service.  Experts suggest that because it is a time consuming technique, it’s the reason you don’t see many hair stylists offering or doing it.  However, it does have many amazing benefits like keeping your hair healthy between appointments, and preventing your hair from getting a lot of damage from breakage and split ends.

Would you try hair dusting?  Or have you?

Your Hair Is Your First Accessory

Accessories are such a big part of our daily style, so often many of us feel lost if we leave the house without any accessories.  While we often think of accessories as jewelry, shoes, scarves and belts (and more) we often forget that our hair is also an accessory.  Ever think of it that way?  Your hair is your first accessory, it’s an accessory that’s with you every single day and goes with you everywhere.  Pretty great, right?  We thought we would share a couple of ways you can maximize on your hair being an accessory you have with you on a daily basis to give you some ideas.

Embrace the Natural Texture
So often we spend time covering up our hair’s natural texture, but actually embracing the natural texture of your hair can be incredibly refreshing and such a powerful way to bring out the accessory element of your hair.  Our hair is all different and unique, just like what we look for in other accessories.  So why not embrace the natural texture and work WITH your hair?  It will add that personal touch to your overall look that you seek out in so many other style-related elements.

Changing the Color
One of the great things about our hair is we have so many different ways that we can make it look different and spice things up.  Since it is an accessory, one way to get a little reboot with our first accessory is to change up the color.  You can change the color as subtle or drastic as you’d like – it’s really all about what works for you, your style and is going to make you feel your best.  Talk to your hair stylist about what their suggestions might be if you’re feeling like you want a change ,but you’re not quite sure what change(s) to make with the color.

Experiment With Differenty Styles
Similar to the color options, we have so many different options when it comes to styling our hair in different ways.  If we’re all really honest, we tend to wear our hair in the same few ways all the time – losing sight of the fact that our hair really is an accessory.  Think about the fact that your hair can completely change the vibe of an outfit when you’re styling your hair.  Sites like Pinterest, are great for getting inspiration when you’re in a bit of a rut.  Adding braids, curls or different techniques may seem like a small thing, but they are fun and easy ways to switch up your hair without accessories.

While your hair is your first accessory, it’s fun to switch things up every now and then.  Even the smallest change can bring about a whole new look and feel to your overall look.  Tomorrow, when you’re doing your hair remember that your hair is your first accessory and decide how you want to work with your first accessory to create a unique and fun look.

From Thick and Unruly to Wavy and Soft

Ever feel like your hair is just continuously unruly?  We’ve definitely all been in phases where it seems like we just can’t get a good handle on our hair looking the way we want it to.  We’re always about problem solving in the beauty department and realized that some ladies with thick, unruly hair are struggling to get their hair looking wavy and soft…the way they want it to look.  So, we’re sharing some of our favorite tips to help you go from thick and unruly to wavy and soft.

woman with curly hair

Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often
The thing about thick hair is it doesn’t need to be washed as often as fine hair.  In fact, it can do damage to it which could be causing it to become too unruly.  If you’re washing your hair every day, it’s time to back off on that.  To have your hair looking wavy and soft, you’re going to need to make sure your hair is healthy and moisturized.  When we wash our hair too often it tends to strip the hair of its natural oils, causing it to become unruly and damaged.  Since you have thick hair, most experts suggest you can go a couple days between washes, and your hair will likely flourish by doing so.

Add Layers
Often ladies (and men) with thick hair tend to notice that their hair can get unruly pretty easily, but having the right haircut can make the world of a difference in this type of situation.  Many experts suggest that adding layers to thick, unruly hair can make it much more manageable and help you get that wavy, soft hair you want.  Since adding layers can take out some of the weight of your hair, and allow more natural movement you’ll likely notice that your hair will help you manage your hair much more easily.

Add Moisture
Unruly hair is often unruly also because it’s lacking some of the moisture it needs.  Thick hair (and all hair really) needs moisture, and to really get that wavy, soft hair you want, you’re going to need to make sure that your hair has the moisture it needs.  Opt for using products that really focus on adding moisture and softness to your hair.  Yes, this means your shampoo, conditioner and other styling products should be focused around adding moisture and softness to your hair.

Avoid Adding Too Much Weight
If your hair is thick and unruly, the last thing you need is to add more weight.  But we realize that you also want to add products to your hair to hold certain hair styles.  If you really want to go from thick and unruly to wavy and soft you’re going to need to focus on using hair care products that don’t add too much weight.  Opting more so for spray based products tend to help you get results from hair care products like hair spray and gels, without adding too much additional weight.

Avoid These Hair Extension Disasters

Hair extensions have definitely grown to be a widely accepted beauty ritual.  While it was once taboo to openly share that you have hair extensions, in today’s world women are proud to share that they’ve added some hair extensions to their look.  There are so many great things that can be done with hair extensions, and they’re such an easy way to change your look.  But, with all good things, there’s always a few things that you want to make sure you’re aware of.  You know we’re always about keeping you well informed so we thought we would discuss some of the disasters that we’ve seen with hair extensions.  Avoid these hair extension disasters….

hair etensions

Visible Scalp/Base Extensions
Back in the late 90’s and early 00’s when hair extensions started to gain some momentum in popularity, there were definitely some disasters that we can’t forget.  Namely, visible scalp and base of the extensions popping up.  This is a definite no-no with hair extensions that we want to make sure you’re avoiding.  If you’re getting your hair extensions done by a professional make sure that the expert is someone who’s been trained properly in hair extensions.  If you’re opting for clip in extensions, make sure that you’re able to blend and cover the base and clip of the extensions so that it’s not visible.

Color that Doesn’t Blend
While we realize that you may be using extensions to add in a different color to your natural hair, we can’t stress enough how much of a disaster, it is when the color doesn’t look blended in with your natural color.  Even if you’re adding purple (or some other color) extensions to your hair, it’s important to make sure that the extension’s color looks like it’s blended seamlessly with your natural color.  While even though the purple (for example) isn’t your natural color, you don’t want the color to look too choppy.  If you are looking to use hair extensions to blend with your natural color, either make sure that they’ve been colored by an expert to match or match well to your natural color.

The Length Being Choppy
Similar to the hair color, you want your hair extensions to look blended in well with your natural hair.  If the extensions are a drastically different length from your natural hair’s length you want to ask your hair stylist to cut them in a way that will give them layers to naturally blend with your hair.  Typically, when adding in extensions we want them to look as natural as possible.  Since they’re typically all one length you’re going to need to ensure that they’re cut to the length that you want and need to really get the natural look you want.

Anytime you’re dealing with extensions, whether clip ins or professional – make sure that you’re using a product/service that’s of high quality.  We know you don’t want to have a hair extension disaster, so make sure you avoid some of these common disasters we’ve seen in the past.

Try A Cut With Layers For Hair That’s Less Flat

Do you get frustrated feeling like you can’t keep your hair from being so flat all the time?  We’ve all been there, that’s for sure.  Sometimes, not matter how much product or hair styling you do your hair just continues to lay flat without any movement.  If you’ve experienced that, or may be experiencing it now, it may actually be because of your haircut.  Our haircut can play a major role in how our hair lays and is able to be styled.  While there’s a lot of benefits to having all hair one length, you may want to try a cut with layers for hair that’s less flat.

woman with bouncy waves

Often times when we have our haircut all one length, our hair tends to be flat because there’s not any natural movement to the hair with the way it’s cut.  Adding layers in hair is a great way to add dimension, definition and volume.  In addition, adding layers is a great way to remove a lot of extra weight that’s in the hair that could also be contributing the hair to laying flat.  See, when our hair is one length it tends to have a lot of weight at the ends of the hair – causing the hair to struggle to have a lot of volume to it.  Layers being added to the hair help to eliminate some of that weight, allowing you to have more volume in the hair much more easily.

The great thing about trying a cut with layers is that there are a ton of different ways to get the benefits from layers in your hair, in a way that best suits your face shape and hair type.  Anytime we’re talking about haircuts and layers, it’s essential that you focus on adding them in a way that’s going to work with your hair type.  Just like when using different hair care products, taking all the different steps isn’t going to give you the results you’re interested in achieving if it’s not done so in a way that works WITH your hair type.  Layers are no different in this factor.

If you’ve been feeling like your hair has been really flat lately, and notice that your hair is all one length you may want to talk to your hair stylist about adding some layers to your haircut.  Since they are the expert, open up a line of communication and ask what they would suggest.  While we tend to have an idea of what layers will look like in our heads – there are so many different ways for hair stylists to add layers to our hair, ask them what would be the best way to get the benefits of layers in a way that works for your face shape and hair type in the best way possible.  When you are talking to your hair stylist about adding layers, be sure to mention that you’re interested in achieving hair that’s not as flat to get the best results.

Increase Your Biotin Intake With Kefir

kefir

It’s no secret that our bodies need certain nutrients to really function properly.  You’ve likely heard us talk about the importance of having a healthy and balanced diet to help you get to your hair and skin goals.  Our hair and skin are so heavily influenced by what we put IN our bodies.  We assume that you’ve likely heard about people taking biotin supplements to help with their hair and nail growth, and appearance.  But we realize that you may not want to just rely on a supplement to get a source of biotin to benefit from what this nutrient can do for your hair and nails.  We’re sharing how you can increase your biotin intake with kefir.

If you’re not fully aware, kefir is a dairy product that’s been found to yield some pretty powerful benefits.  It’s said to have the most probiotic sources in the world, along with plenty of other nutrients.  It’s basically a fermented milk source that comes from cow, goat or sheep’s milk.  However, there’s not just a milk based form of kefir.  Those that struggle with dairy can still benefit from kefir as there’s a water kefir source as well.  Water kefir is created from coconut water, or another sugary water source.  As we said, it’s the most powerful source of probiotic available on our planet but it doesn’t stop there.  It’s high in plenty of other nutrients like calcium and magnesium.  And of course, it’s really high in biotin – hence why we’re bringing it up here.

We’ve established that kefir is an incredible source of biotin.  But you may be wondering how you can actually incorporate it into your diet.  There are plenty of kefirs available for you to purchase at certain stores.  Experts suggest making sure that you look for more organic based kefir sources to really get the best benefits from incorporating it into your diet.  With milk kefir sources you can increase your biotin intake by of course drinking them.  But if you want to do more than just drink kefir, you can add them into many different recipes.  Many suggest that milk kefirs are able to act as substitutes to yogurt, sour cream and heavy cream in recipes.  In addition, you can add milk kefir sources to your favorite creamy soup recipes and other recipes that call for a creamy additive.

If you struggle with dairy products and need to opt for the water based kefir sources, you can still do more to increase your kefir intake aside from just drinking them.  Some experts suggest adding water based kefir to your smoothies, or salad dressings to switch things up.  In addition, if you like to drink your water kefir source you can purchase it and have fun adding different additions to it like you would with regular water.  Mix it up by adding different fruit combinations, or even fresh herbs.

Fortunately, there’s plenty of ways to increase your biotin intake with kefir – you’re sure to find a way to add kefir to your routine!

How To Make Your Wax Job Last Longer

woman getting legs waxed

Are you a regular waxer?  Waxing has definitely grown to become a very mainstream beauty service among women, and men.  It’s pretty standard for people to get some area of their body waxed on a regular basis.  If you get waxed pretty regularly, you’re probably always eager to find ways to elongate your time between appointments.  Because let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to be able to go longer periods of time before heading back into the salon for another wax appointment?  Well, you may be in luck, because we’ve discovered some tips on how to make your wax job last longer – and we’re sharing them, now!

Make Sure Your Hair Is The Right Length
We get it, the point of getting a wax is to eliminate any unwanted hair you have on your body.  But the thing is, if your hair isn’t the length that’s suggested by the experts in that area of the body the wax will actually miss some of the hair – causing you to need to get your wax appointments more often.  So, instead of rushing to get an appointment scheduled as soon as your hair starts to grow a bit, resist the urge and really make sure that it’s the length that’s suggested for that area of the body before heading in.  This will help to ensure that ALL of the hair will be waxed off and prevent you from needing to make appointments as often.

Exfoliate and Moisturize Before you Wax
So often we just head into our wax appointment not really thinking much about any prep that we should do for our skin prior to the appointment.  Experts suggest that you exfoliate your skin before your appointment, this helps to get rid of any dead skin cells.  In addition to exfoliating your skin, make sure your skin is well moisturized before heading into your appointment.  Why is this so important?  Well, when our skin isn’t exfoliated or moisturized, it tends to be pretty dry.  When our skin is too dry it can affect the waxing process and actually prevent the wax from fully taking out the hair and instead the hair just breaking – causing you to need to head into the salon more often.  Keeping the routine of exfoliating and moisturizing helps to ensure that your skin is hydrated to allow the wax to do its thing much more effectively.

See an Expert
As tempting as it can be to do your waxing yourself at home, it’s really best to see an expert for this type of service.  Experts understand how to work with your skin in the best way, and can help to make sure you’re keeping yourself in a solid schedule for your waxing.  In general, when you get your hair waxed you will begin to notice a typical cycle that’s established.  Keep up with that schedule for the best results long-term and avoid shaving, plucking or threading between to help your hair get into a more consistent schedule.
