Summer Hair Care Tips

Woman with beautiful hair

There’s no better way to spend the sweet summertime days and nights than in the great outdoors. The summer welcomes comfy clothing, minimal makeup, and natural hair. It may be impossible to fall out of love with summer ways, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t health and beauty conflicts throughout the season. Many of us have been versed a time or two on the proper way to care for and protect out skin during the warmer months, but few of us have taken into consideration the necessary measures that should be taken to safeguard those tresses. Since the sun has been putting in the overtime, we thought we should shed some light on some tried and true summer hair care tips.

Hit Snooze and Skip the Shampoo
As you may have heard, scrubbing your scalp with shampoo doesn’t just cleanse your locks, but it has been found to strip the hair of its healthy natural oils. Naturally, it seems ideal to rid the hair of oil, but the thing is, hair that is over washed compensates for the continual oil loss by amping up oil production, leaving your hair more and more greasy looking over time. Instead of  washing your hair with shampoo in the shower, simply sleep in a bit later and skip your shower every few days. If you absolutely need to shower, try rinsing your hair directly under the shower head for a few minutes to help reduce the excess oil.

Woman applying conditioner

Conditioner is Key
We’re true believers that saltwater and all day pool days are good for the soul, but sadly, all the sodium and chlorine isn’t the best thing for your tresses. Reverse the damage caused by the elements by using a deep conditioning treatment on a regular basis.

Better Safe than Sorry, Use Protection
Often times we overlook the fact that out scalp is just as susceptible to sunburn as is our skin. Not only that, but our hair is not able to provide the adequate UVA and UVB protection. There are a few different options to prevent your scalp from burning this summer:

  • Look into shampoos and conditioners that contain sunblock
  • Mix a small amount of oil-free sunscreen in the palm of your hand with your regular hair product. This way you’re killing two birds with one stone in mere seconds.
  • Whenever possible, sport a cute baseball cap or floppy monogrammed sun hat.

Give Your Blowdryer a Day Off
It’s no secret that applying continual heat to the hair on a regular basis isn’t hair-healthy. Chances are that the temperature outside is as high as the low or medium setting on your blow-dryer, so why not let your hair dry naturally? Of course, there are days when the time commitment to air-drying isn’t realistic, but the take home point here is that whenever possible, you should give all heat tools a day off.

Don’t Crack Under Pressure
We’ve all done it before: gathered our hair into the perfect style, secured it with elastics and bobby pins only to realize that a single strand of hair was being pulled so much that it was causing an uncomfortable painful sensation. Remember, pain is the body’s way to tell us something is wrong! When you’re experiencing hair-pulling scalp-pain, it’s because those locks are being pulled so tight that they are about to split and snap. You hair is already in a vulnerable state in the summer, simply avoid splitting due to too-tight styles by opting for loose braids and messy buns.

Beach Worthy Hair Accessories

The weather is warm and the sky is clear, atlas summer is here! Those who live in a coastal state will undoubtedly make their way to the beach – if they haven’t already that is. Whether you leave your beach blanket in the trunk of your car because you head to the beach every weekend, or you are excitedly planning ahead for the beach trip you have this summer, you should most definitely test out the waters with some of the super cute beach worthy hair accessories below!

Starfish hair pin

Starfish Hairpins
These are perfect for the days when you want nothing other than to throw your hair in a messy bun, find your favorite pair of flip flops, and set your sights straight to the shore. When you crave the beach this badly, you probably aren’t too interested in how your makeup and hair look, but that’s no reason to skip these delicate hairpins! Not only will your inner mermaid be subtly on display, but you won’t have to repeatedly re-do your bun because the hairpins will hold everything in place.

Jeweled Barrettes
For those who are all about the bling, but chose to leave your glam accessories at home with the understanding (and maybe past experience?) that jewelry can leave some pretty strange tan lines you should absolutely get yourself some jeweled barrettes. You can use them to pull your hair out of your eyes, and you’ll be thrilled that you’re rocking your glam style at the beach!

Seashell Bobby Pins
No matter what your hair length or type, bobby pins always manage to make themselves useful. Why not accessorize your tresses with seashell accented bobby pins?! If you can’t find them at a local boutique or hair salon, you can easily DIY in less than five minutes! All you need to do is use a hot glue gun to adhere a tiny seashell (or a few) the end of a clean bobby pin. Just be careful not to glue it too close to the rounded edge, as the shells are more likely to fall off when they’re on that edge.

Woman wearing a sun hat

Big Floppy Sun Hat
Floppy sun hats are not just cute, but they are totally in right now! If you are worried about the sun getting to your hair color, or if your just having a bad beach-hair day, grab a big floppy sun hat!

Minimalism Inspired Broach
Gilded inspired accessories are super hot this season. The simplicity of a bronze or brushed silver broach allows the accessories to match virtually anything. A cute way to wear this is by securing it slightly above your ponytail holder.

Cuff Ponytail Holder
Similar to a minimalist broach, cuff ponytail holders can be worked into any style, from preppy to boho. Simply pull your hair up into a ponytail. Then slip your hair through the cuff, and slide it all the way up until the accessory hides the elastic holding your ponytail in place.

Romantic Pony Bow
Perfect for a moonlit beach walk, a romantic ponytail bow is simply made by tying a long piece of ribbon around a pony or half pony.

Beautiful Braids to Try This Summer

Braided styles are in –every girl knows that. From kids, to teens, to adults, they are a beautiful style that can be worn in any manner for any occasion. Nowadays, there are so many gorgeous braided styles to choose from that you could literally create a different braid for every day of the week. Lionesse would like to give you some braid options that you could try to wear this summer, or even do on your child’s hair, or friend’s hair.

Five Strand Braid Hairstyle

Five Strand Braid
Wearing a five strand braid long and down your back or even flipping over your shoulder is one of the cutest, most fashionable styles you can wear for summer. This style goes with everything, from shorts and a pretty blouse, to a cute summery dress and sandals. There are so many tutorials available online detailing how to create a five strand braid, and it’s one of the easiest, trendiest braids you can wear this summer.

Braided Bun hairstyle

Braided Bun
For a cute twist on a typical bun, why not try a braided bun? A section of hair is braided and wrapped around the already created bun, leaving behind a gorgeous braided bun style. This is a classy look so it would even be suitable to wear to an important event, such as a wedding. It’s also a very nice style for summer, as it keeps the hair off of your neck in the heat and humidity – and it’s easy to keep smooth and sleek by use of a shine spray and hairspray.

Crowned Fishtail Braid hairstyle

Crowned Fishtail Braid
A crowned fishtail braid incorporated braiding the hair into a fishtail braid, one of the trendiest current braid styles, and wrapping it around the head similar to how you would wear a flower crown, or a milk maid braid – which we will discuss below. The fishtail braid is a special type of braid which resembles, you got it, the tail of a fish. This would be gorgeous to wear a bride for a summer wedding, or as a guest in attendance. It would also be a very sweet look for a first date, or even when spending time with friends.

Milk Maid Braid Hairstyle

Milk Maid Braid
Milk maid crown braids are another easier type of braided look to create, which is much more simplified than a fishtail braid, and looks very summery and beautiful. The name comes from Dutch and British milk maids, who were actually women who were employed to milk cows. They would typically wear their hair in this fashion to milk the cows and collect the dairy. You could also incorporate a fishtail look into this braid to give it a spin if you’re skilled or so inclined to do so.

Upside Down Crown Braids Hairstyle

Upside Down Crown Braid
Upside down crown braids are another beautiful type of crown braid to create. It requires braiding the hair in an upside down fashion – again, many tutorials are available online to learn how to create this style, and they don’t require much skill or effort such as the five strand braid we spoke about above. This looks more elegant than the milk maid braid or even the crowned fishtail braid we spoke of. You could wear this for a special occasion or keep it as a casual hairstyle.

Fishtail pigtails hairstyle

Fishtail Pigtails
Braided pigtails were a go-to hairstyle for many of us when we were children. Now that we are grown, we can still wear this style with a new spin – fishtail braids! Create two fishtail braids on parted hair, one on either side of the face to get this look. Keep this one for a casual day or just hanging around. Also a cute look when you go to do your grocery shopping or running errands. This is a fun summery hairstyle that goes with anything.
