“A strong spirit transcends rules”
–Prince Rogers Nelson, (1958 – 2016)
It’s rare that a superstar has the ability to influence not only fans, but also impact the fashion world, beauty realm, and music industry; but Prince did it all. As the world continues to mourn the loss of legendary musician, Prince, it is important to celebrate all that he accomplished in his time and appreciate the legacy he has left behind.
A powerful musician, Prince was the sole recorder of his music. As his lyrics captivated fans throughout the 1970’s and 80’s, the star challenged gender boundaries, disputed fashion limits, and inspired trends for years to come with his electric style. Truly walking to the beat of his own drum, Prince’s androgynous personal style echoed on and off stage with (with the help of costume designer Marie France), frilly shirts, platform boots, tight but flowing curls, military jackets, head-to-toe bold colored suits. It is no doubt that Prince had a direct influence on popular fashion designers and style houses including Donatella Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, and Matthew Williamson. Of course, that’s not all, Prince also managed to influence the personal style of Beyonce, Dev Hynes, Florence Welch, Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and more!
Stylist to the stars Kat Typaldos gave media a statement regarding Prince’s passing, Typaldos said “Prince was so fluid as an artist from a gender perspective, a music perspective and a wardrobe perspective. He wasn’t afraid of taking risks — that’s where the sexiness comes from. He just had the confidence and swag to do whatever he wanted. That’s the Prince attitude, the David Bowie attitude. They weren’t subscribing to trends. They acted instinctively, and there’s something about that that people really respond to. There was a fearlessness in how Prince presented himself to the world.” We truly could not have said it better ourselves.

Prince’s Bright and Bold Colors X Icon Beyonce
Who else to pay homage to Prince than Queen Bey, herself? The chart-topping, pop icon seems to be inspired by many of Prince’s mid-to-late 80’s looks, as she frequently sports head-to-toe bright colored suits. One of the best was her sunny yellow pantsuit paired with silver studded heels.
