If you have wigs of your own, or want to use one for a costume or special occasion likely one of your biggest concerns is keeping its natural appearance. Unless you want your wig to NOT look natural, of course. But since we know often times one of the biggest struggles for people with wigs is the idea of keeping it looking natural, we’re sharing tips to keeping your wig’s natural appearance to help get you started. The good news is it’s really not difficult to keep a wig looking natural – you probably didn’t think it was, did you?
Go To The Pros To Purchase It
While we totally understand not wanting to spend a fortune on a wig, experts continue to suggest that you skip the costume store to purchase a wig and instead go to a beauty supply store. The quality you’re going to get from a beauty supply store is going to be tremendously better, and many people suggest that you’re going to get the best product for your money at a beauty supply store.
Style Your Wig
While we get one of the perks of getting a wig is that it’s already styled, experts suggest actually getting it styled further. Many wigs are styled and cut in a more generic cut/style, so getting your wig cut to flatter you and your face shape is going to be a much better bet and way to make sure that it looks more natural. If you’re not confident in your own skills on trimming/cutting the wig, it’s wise to actually take it to a pro to make sure that you really get the best cut for your wig. This same idea goes for the color of the wig, if you don’t love the color or if it seems to be a bit too perfect change some of the color to it to make it look more natural.
Un-Perfect The Part
Many say that wigs have parts that are a little TOO perfect, giving them that more faux hair look. To give your wig a more natural appearance, experts actually suggest using tweezers to plug out random strands of hair to create a part that isn’t so perfect and gives it that more natural appearance.
Powder Away The Shine
Similar to the parts being a little too perfect, many wigs tend to be ultra shiny – a little TOO shiny giving them that faux hair look. So to give your wig a more natural appearance, experts suggest using a powder to wipe over the wig to mattify the shine a bit. There’s an actual hair powder you can use, but if you don’t have that handy a dry shampoo will do the same thing (just spray it over the wig for the same effect).
Use The Proper Tools
Before you go ahead and just use your regular brush on your wig…stop. You’re going to need a special wig brush to make sure that you don’t cause unnecessary tangles in the wig. In addition, many experts suggest using volumizing products on the wigs because many need the extra volume to create a more natural look.
