The holidays mean parties. Lots and lots of parties! You’ve got Christmas parties. You’ve got latke parties. For a few unlucky souls, you’ve got birthday parties. And then you’ve got New Year’s Eve parties. For every one of them, you want to look your best. That means getting out your favorite party dresses, putting on some great makeup, and fixing your hair in some stylish new dos.
Updos are a favorite for a reason: They look chic and beautiful. But you don’t want to wear the same old bun to every party. Try some of this updos for a different look for your next party:
A celeb favorite this season! From Cameron Diaz to Jessica Alba, this look is for everyone! The crown braid is like the fancy updo for the manic pixie dream girl. If you know how to do a French braid, you know how to do a crown braid. Just start the braid from your part (either a side part or a center part), and braid it along your hair line all the way around your scalp. Tuck the ends under the braid where you started.
You can do a simpler version of the crown braid by setting aside one section of hair near the crown and creating one long, regular braid from it. Pull the rest of your hair into a bun or chignon, and wrap the braid around your crown, pinning it in place.
This is one of the easiest updos to create, and it looks as elegant as a chignon. Just center part your hair, and put an elastic headband with a thin band on top of your hair just like you would a hat. Choose a color that’s close to your hair if you want it to blend.
Wrap small sections of hair around the band, and pull them through the elastic. You will be pulling some hair through several times. Start from one side and work until you get to the nape of the neck. Then work the other side. You will pull the section of hair at the nap of your neck through the headband multiple times, until you draw up the length of the hair. Tuck any strays hairs in and pin anything in place that needs it.
You don’t have to go all the way up to have an updo. The side-swept pony is a stylish updo that hangs right at the nape of your neck. Create the side part that you like — go deeper for a more dramatic look — and gather the hair in a pony just below your ear. Wrap some hair around the tie, and curl the ends for an elegant and polished look.
For a bit more flourish, sweep your bangs into the style, pulling them around the hair tie, and pull all of the pony into one big curl instead of multiple curled strands.
