Remember Miranda Priestly?
Of course you do! Think Meryl Strep in 2003 hit film The Devil Wears Prada. Yes, that was her! British-born Miranda Priestly was born into a less than fortunate family, but that didn’t stop her from becoming the editor-in-chief of Runway, one of the most influential fashion magazines. Priestly is known for three things: No.1, she wears a white Hermès scarf somewhere on her person every single day. No.2, she treats assistants in a less than polite manner. No.3, her beautiful and fierce silver hair. With celebrities making films and recording records past retirement age, it really is no wonder the trend #grannyhair is one of the most requested hair color changes in salons today.
Who Knew Gray Could be so Sexy?
Perhaps the color gray doesn’t sound as sexy as the color silver, but we are of course talking about the same fab color of locks that your grandma rocks. Miranda Priestly is certainly not the only one rocking silver streaks. In fact, celebs including Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Pink are known to frequent this look. Some celebs, like Kylie Jenner and Demi Lovato, have even capitalised on the ongoing trend by designing and promoting hair extension lines.
The Eternally Young Trend
Gone are the days when ladies would rush to the salon at the to get their grays covered. While there is no denying that everyone is still yearning for tight, glowing and youthful skin, there is also a new trend exploding; embracing your age, at any age. This movement of sorts has had a slow start, for some reason society has made age into an ugly word, when it really should be something of pride and beauty. It seems as if the eternally young trend will dim a bit as it lets in the power of embracing your age.
As more ladies are taking care of their silver ‘do’s, this new and edgy look redefines what it means to be “going gray.” Silver hair is taking over social media, with girls saying how much they would love the silver look. And their counterparts who take the leap and join the chic color trend are given endless amounts of compliments.
Tips from a Pro
Madison is a multi-talented hairstylist and makeup artist who works at ritzy, high-class salon and day spa. “We started running out of silver color, no one could have predicted this color trend, but it has totally taken over!” Madison says about #grannyhair.
The one thing that she insisted get across to anyone who wants to take on the silver streaks trend is to “start small, just like with any color highlight.” Madison explained that when searching on social media, hundreds of thousands of pictures come up for silver hair, and a lot of those pictures are girls with a full head of silver locks. The thing is Madison said, “it’s a long process of bleaching and coloring the hair, and it isn’t the easiest thing to un-do.” For those who are certain they are ready to take on this chic grunge look, Madison has a few suggestions:
- Start small. Tell your stylist that you’re interested in the silver look, and you want to throw in a few streaks. This will give you a sense if you really like the color.
- Condition! Because getting the color silver is a harsh process on the hair, make sure that you are regularly using conditioning masques.
- Own it! As with any big hair change you make, not everyone is going to love it as much as you do, but don’t let it get you down. The silver color trend isn’t for everyone, but those who can rock it, rock it.
