It is no secret that extreme heat hair tools, such as high powered blow dryers, fast heating flat irons, and four hundred degree curling wands, are not the best thing for anyone’s hair. There is no denying that these tools have awesome benefits, but there are also some pretty amazing benefits that can come from unplugging the hair tools and letting your hair do its thing, naturally.
One of the best things you can do for your hair starting today is let it air dry. Of course, we are not suggesting that you walk out of the house with soaking wet tresses in the middle of winter. Rather we are suggesting that you give yourself some extra time in the morning, or switch up the order of your routine for the benefit of your hair. Two of the most common causes of hair breakage and split ends are a lack of moisture and the over processing of your hair. Lack of moisture is one of the most common causes of hair breakage (if not the most common). Lack of moisture and natural scalp oils happen from over shampooing, cold winter months, and regular swimming (due to the chemicals in pools). Over processing is another huge cause of hair breakage. While over processing definitely happens from too much chemical processing, it is also the blow dryers, flat irons and styling wands that are to blame. If you are using heat tools to style your hair regularly, you are probably over processing your hair and essentially frying your ends.
When you stop using blow dryers to speed up the drying process in the morning, you will start to notice some pretty amazing hair changes. Your hair will appear to be softer and stronger, since you are not breaking down its integrity with heat every morning. Also, the exception is that since you will not be using heat to dry your hair, that you will instead have a towel wrapped around your head, turban style, for a longer period of time. By wrapping your hair up like this, you are also allowing the natural oils do absorb and do their job.
Many people assume that not drying their hair means one of two things; either not showering for the day, or showering and having a bad hair day. But let’s just get one thing clear here, just because you shower and choose to not use heat tools, does not mean that you will have a bad hair day. To ensure that you are able to rock your non-heated hair, just follow these simple steps.
- Remove any excess product buildup by using a clarifying shampoo. Not only will this keep your hair feeling lighter and cleaner than with a regular shampoo, but it will also speed up drying time.
- Once you’ve finished your shower, be sure to twist your hair to wring out the water, but be sure that you are doing this gently.
- Gently detangle your hair with your fingers before applying a light hair serum, moose or gel to your locks.
- Wrap your hair up turban style while you get ready, and then after about twenty minutes go ahead and let your hair down. It should be near dry. For those of you who have thicker hair, you can either continue letting your hair dry naturally, or use your blow dryer, on low power for just a few minutes to finish up.
