It can clean teeth, be used as a facial scrub, remove tough, stains and even soothe sunburn. We’re talking about baking soda of course! The common household product can do everything mentioned and so much more, including offer an amazing and beneficial clean to your locks. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate is actually a natural and harmless compound that can be found in just about every part of our day-to-day lives. Believe it or not, sodium bicarbonate is found in various aspects of nature, deep in the ocean and the ocean water, in dirt and soil, the substance is even in our foods, and our bodies. The easiest way to understand baking soda is to think of it as a neutralizer for a large number of compounds. As a neutralizer, the substance is helpful in distorting toxins. Remarkably, sodium bicarbonate is existent in all – yes, all – of our body fluids and organs; it is given the major responsibility in balancing acid in the human body.
Surely this super-substance should be used more often, so why not start implementing its powers by creating your own homemade shampoo? Washing your hair with baking soda on a regular basis will eliminate the harsh chemical deposits and residues typical shampoos and conditioners leave behind. In addition to leaving yucky, harmful gunk behind, shampoos have been found to strip our scalps of its natural oils, baking soda works to promote healthy production of natural oils. Those who have traded in shampoo for baking soda have found their hair to be smooth and healthy, less oily, full of volume, and much more manageable. When you’re ready to make the change, check out the options below.
Baking Soda + Water = Clarifying and Everyday Shampoo
Buy an empty shampoo squeeze bottle, or give an old one a good rinse. Once you’ve got your shampoo bottle, simply adding one part baking soda and three parts of water to the bottle, give the bottle a good shake for a few minutes to mix up the goodness. When in the shower, simply apply the mixture onto your head and gently massage it into your scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it. If you find that your hair is smooth and tangle free without any sort of conditioner, then continue to style your hair as usual. However, for those of you who have the urge to grab the store bought conditioner after rinsing out the baking soda solution, don’t – you’ll only be reapplying all the chemicals that you’re avoiding!
Apple Cider Vinegar + Water = Smoothing Conditioner
Find another clean shampoo squeeze bottle and add in one part apple cider vinegar and four parts filtered water. To leave your hair smelling fresh and yummy (rather than vinegar-y), add in just a few drops of fragrant essential oil. Give this bottle a good shake now, and every time before use. Once you’ve rinsed out your baking soda shampoo, continue by applying this solution to your locks. It may seem strange to use such a thin “conditioner” at fist, but you’ll get used to it. Unlike store bought conditioner, it isn’t necessary to leave the mixture on for an extended period of time, in fact, you can rinse it out after just a few seconds if you’d like. Finally, right before getting out of the shower, rinse your locks with cold water, as this will seal the cuticle and lock in moisture, leaving your hair smooth, shiny, and frizz free!
